Why MarineVerse?

Why MarineVerse?: Of the sailing simulators available for download on Quest 2, MarineVerse Cup was the one I just had to pick! I mean that literally. You got me over a barrel here. With the data you’ve had me sign over for this game you could tell me the colour of my underwear and whether or not I have cavities, but I can’t goose-wing in your boats, and the yacht, like as not, spawns in duplicate; with two sets of everything superimposed and with my controllers rendered stuck halfway underneath the floor and inoperable requiring a reboot. Over. A. Barrel. What makes you interested in sailing and virtual reality?: Is this one question, or two? If it’s two questions they have very long and different answers; if you want my life story you’ll have to recompile it from all that data you’re snaffling. If it’s one question, then the answer is that sailing is an activity with many enjoyable features that might be expected to survive their translation into the spacial and tactile constraints of the VR environment with much of their character intact. Much in the way that driving cars, flying planes, and playing table tennis all do, and in the way that horseback riding, basketball, and wrestling do not. Relatedly, a well designed sailing simulator could begin to impart a visceral embodied understanding of basic sailing principles in advance of a new enthusiast’s first time on the water, not to mention give experienced land-bound sailors their fix, as well as open up the fun of competitive dinghy sailing to an entire world of non-swimmers. A sailing simulator with a decent foundation that is then iteratively developed in response to user feedback could really knock it out of the park. I hope more sims come online to provide you with the competitive economic incentive needed for you to iterate the sophistication of your product in just this way. Otherwise I fear simple economics will only incentivise you to iteratively sophisticate the legal language of your data collection policies, and I’ll be left sailing downwind on a featureless millpond of an ocean, still unable to goose-wing, struggling in vain to decipher whether or not I gave you permission to record me in my bathroom.
