Telltales and twist
SUGGESTED BY (rcmacf@yahoo.co.uk): Addition of cars for the head sheets and vang control for the main. Tell tales up the sails to assess twist.
The Boom Vang helps hold the main down, when broad reach or running downwind. When you let the mainsheet all the way out it is not holding the boom down, and the boom tends to rise up.
My rig has 3 telltales on the front of the jib, and 2 at the back edge of the main. Trimming the jib and 'steering to the telltales' is a big part of maximizing speed. Speed should not top out too easily. That last knot and a half you should really have to work for, with finesse on the finer points of sail trim and steering.
