Accidental Jibe effect/penalty

It's probably me, but It's not clear how to deploy the spinnaker.
-I feel like there needs to be a consequence for an accidental or violent Jibe.  As it stands, violent jibes in the game simply happen and seem normal....when of course they're one of the worst events that can happen.   I think it should be punished somehow with a period of chaos or loss of control of the sails, or even a loss of time. 
-I've completed races, but I still can't unlock new locations.  Not sure why.
