Spinnaker on BBB
Can we have a spinnaker to launch on downwind runs (and retrieve
I would like to see the spinnaker being an optional launch from.broad reach to broad reach.
i think we should add asymmetrical spinnakers since you can use them alot more and they are more relevant since most modern boats have them they should be controlled the same way as the main sheet and the genuar we should also have control over the halyard since it being automatic is a bit too easy for the speed it gives. sorry if the terms are wrong my primary language for sailing is danish.
Status changed to planned
I've grown to love the requirements to get it up but to compensate would like it to stay up at a wider angle. it should be possible to keep it up for one triangle leg and an advantage if you do it well but a disadvantage if you take too long
Option to launch and retrieve controlled by the helm with a wider angle of deployment would be good. leaving retrive to the helm is essential for realism (tactically get it wrong eg by trying to turn to windward beat or gybe with it flying and your race is done) All that said, I like what you have done so far - makes for attractiove sailing. More colours perhaps starting with a national colour(s) or a small flag.
It's been a while since we had spinnakers in races.
Let me know how you feel about them now.
How could we make them better?
I think their needs to be quite a bit more space in where the Spinnaker stays up (for realism) but don't mind the direct downwind requirement for gameplay to launch.
Needs to be a jibe penalty though!
Aaron Sawyer: So what should/could happen when you jibe? A simple option could be to "take it down", and require player to wait again for it to launch on a new tack
also There should be a penalty in speed when it goes up and when it jibes. In real life a boat that puts up and takes down the Spinnaker poorly is slower overall than one that does not. in highland races this is a strategic concern for boats, whether or not we will just sail well or try for a Spinnaker launch and risk disaster
the Spinnaker is wonderful but too confined to directly downwind. Perhaps once it's up it stays up inside closer to a 30 degree range? people should be able to put it up and keep it up going from Mark A to be and be to see. That's how real life is. @greg.
Spinnaker great fun as a new toy but blind sailing is not a help. need to see under it when up Also needs to be helms choice when to launch and take down with a button and a slower launch (and take down) with problems with boat handling if you get it wrong. But presumably all thats coming . Look forward to seeing a race with all the spinnackers flying should look glorius
Mike Hoare: Thanks Mike! I expect it will take a while to fully "nail" it, but yes, the end result should be awesome :-)
There is an inherent penalty in racing early unless you completely hide the boats and times and places in Cup. Making it always a solo sail. (don't do that) but... Consider having the first Spinnaker being more of a boost than the latter ones?
Aaron Sawyer: I suggest we consider this issue on separate card, as there might be other ways to level the playing field: http://feedback.marineverse.com/marineverse-cup/p/daily-race-practice-early-bird-boost
Aesthetics: ideally this is a way to add beauty to the game with different colorful sails. In Cup maybe its based on the number of racers like first racer gets pattern 1 and second 2 etc
For BBB and MarineCup different modes. BBB should just be a magical bit of fun. A beautiful surprise. For Cup should be a button to launch and return and a big speed penalty for having it up when sailing at the wrong angle. And it would stop you from turning upwind if not down enough
Status changed to in progress
Next version ( 0.3.8 ) will have an experimental spinnaker. Questions to everyone. How should it work, what impact it should have, and how do you want to operate it?

Aaron Sawyer: Translucent ? was more what i meant. Is that the same as opaque? Sort of like looking through plastic so sort of blurry or am i complicating things again ;) Either way will make watching the replays 10x better.
I think having it take a slightly different amount of time based on sail angle is also an idea... straight downwind being the slowest
Jon Spicer: transparent would be nice but perhaps the more realistic struggle would be to have it opaque and 6 ft off the deck. it blocks vision when going up and down... and that takes about 8-10 seconds up and 4-6 down

Greg Dziemidowicz: Can it be made transparent so we can see through it from behind? Took the paint of the starter buoy and wrote off the starter cruiser a few times practicing with it :)

Greg Dziemidowicz: it needs to be furled and unfurled with 2 separate winches Asia opposed to a slider. It should increase downwind speed.
I think this is necessary on both the racer and BBB. nice for the day sailors to play with
Spinnaker needs to be auto-adjusting- just let us mess with raising and lowering. No skipper races with a spinnaker but no crew. Can also greatly effect boat stability in gusts requiring skipper to steer more downwind to right the ship.
Spinnaker can be automated and fairly consistent in how long it takes to get up and down. It's a judgement call as to when the skipper takes it down for racing in Cup. also obviously Spinnaker is one of the most beautiful parts of sailing

No spinaker but goosewing ability please
