VR for Sailing Clubs FAQ

20 questions

Getting Started#

How can my sailing club use VR sailing?
Two simple steps:

Step 1: Create a Group. Anyone at your club can create a MarineVerse Group in 30 seconds. This gives your club a dedicated page, club leaderboards, and a discount code for members.

Step 2: Get Verified. Contact us to verify your club and unlock additional benefits like bulk pricing, engagement analytics, and priority access to new features.

Optional: VR Corner. For clubs with a tech champion, set up 1-2 headsets at the clubhouse for member use during open days or rainy weather.
What's the simplest way to get started?
Start with a Group. Search for your club, or create it in 30 seconds if it doesn't exist. Then share the group page link in your newsletter. Members who already use MarineVerse will find you, and curious members can discover VR sailing.
Do we need to buy VR headsets?
No! The easiest approach is to let members use their own headsets at home. Many sailors already have Meta Quest headsets. Your club can simply promote MarineVerse as a member benefit and let individuals decide if they want to try VR.
We're a volunteer-run club. Is this too much work?
Not at all. Creating a Group takes 30 seconds. Share the link in your newsletter or on your notice board. You don't need to become VR experts — let interested members champion it from there.

Benefits for Members#

What do members get from VR sailing?
Members can practice sailing year-round from home, learn basics before on-water courses, compete with club mates on leaderboards, and stay connected during off-seasons. It's particularly valuable for beginners building confidence, and competitive sailors who want extra practice.
Is it useful for experienced sailors?
Yes, though differently. Experienced sailors often enjoy the competitive aspects (racing, leaderboards), virtual cruising in MarineVerse Globe, and the social connection with fellow club members who also sail VR.
What about beginners and learn-to-sail students?
This is where VR shines. Before their first on-water lesson, students can spend time in VR learning boat parts, understanding wind direction, and practicing tacking in a safe environment. They show up on day 1 already understanding the basics.

Groups#

What are MarineVerse Groups?
Groups let your club members find each other on MarineVerse. Once your club has a group, members can join it, see who else from the club is sailing VR, and compete on club-specific leaderboards. Learn more about Groups.
Who can create a group for our club?
Anyone! You don't need to be the commodore. If you sail at the club and want to represent it on MarineVerse, go ahead and create the group. Think of it as being your club's VR sailing champion.
What does a group admin get?
A dedicated club page, a shareable link, club leaderboards, and discount codes to offer members a deal on MarineVerse Club Membership (Sailing Pass). Groups with engaged members get priority access to new features like custom VR locations.

Training Integration#

Can VR replace on-water training?
No, and we don't claim it should. VR is a supplement that makes on-water time more effective. Students arrive knowing the basics, freeing instructors to focus on the hands-on skills that only real boats can teach.
Are there formal training programs?
Yes, we partner with NauticEd for certified sailing education. MarineVerse includes a Training Room with structured lessons. Sailing schools can integrate VR as a pre-course module.
We run RYA/YA/ASA courses. Can VR help?
Absolutely. Contact us at ahoy@marineverse.com to discuss how VR can complement your official course curriculum.

VR at the Club#

Should we have VR headsets at the clubhouse?
It's optional and works best when you have a dedicated champion to run it. If you have someone enthusiastic about VR, a "VR Corner" can be great for rainy days, club nights, and introducing new members. If not, focus on the digital approach instead.
What about hygiene with shared headsets?
Use disposable face covers, clean between users, and keep hand sanitiser available. This is a real concern for club-shared headsets, which is why we recommend the digital/home-use approach for most clubs.
What equipment do we need for a VR Corner?
1-2 Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S headsets, a TV for spectator viewing (via casting), a cleaning kit, and ideally a dedicated facilitator for open sessions.

Accessibility#

Can VR sailing help people with disabilities?
Yes! VR sailing has been successfully used by Sailability chapters. It provides sailing experiences for people who can't easily get on the water, and can help build confidence before attempting adapted sailing.
Are there Sailability success stories?
Sailability chapters in Australia and New Zealand have used MarineVerse effectively. We'd love to work with more chapters. Contact us at ahoy@marineverse.com.

Commercial & Pricing#

Is there bulk pricing for clubs?
Yes. Active groups can get discount codes to offer members deals on Sailing Pass. For larger organisations wanting bulk licenses, contact us to discuss options.
How much does this cost the club?
The basic digital approach costs nothing — creating a Group is free, and members use their own headsets at home.

MarineVerse Sailing Club app costs $29.99 per headset, but we offer club discounts. For clubs using VR regularly with under 5 headsets, ensure each account has a Club Membership (Sailing Pass) purchased. For 5+ headsets, contact us at ahoy@marineverse.com for bulk discounts.

If you want headsets at the club, that's a hardware investment (Meta Quest headsets start around $300-500 USD).
